Blade runner has to qualify again

OSCAR "Blade Runner" Pistorius has qualified for the London Olympics again but the double amputee runner will have to qualify again within three months of the Games to officially book himself a flight to England.

Pistorius clocked 45.20 to win the 400m at the Athletics Gauteng North junior and senior championships regional qualifier in Hatfield on Saturday.

He improved for a second time the mark of 45.30 laid down by the IAAF, the athletics world governing body for able-bodied athletes.

Pistorius first qualified in a time of 45.07 in Italy last year.

The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee said it wanted all the athletes to meet the qualifying criteria in the three months leading up to the Olympics.

Pistorius wants to make history as the first amputee athlete to run at the Olympics and could be considered good enough by South Africa's Olympic body.

"I am absolutely thrilled to have run the Olympic qualification time again," he said. "I felt strong out there and I'm happy with my performance."

Meanwhile, Pistorius will use the BT Paralympic World Cup in Manchester, England, in May as a dress rehearsal for the London Olympics and Paralympics.

Pistorius has confirmed his participation in the T43/44 100m and 200m events in Manchester.

"I've been waiting a long time for 2012 to come and I'm so excited it's now here," said Pistorius, who is confident of qualifying for the Olympics and Paralympics.

"The Olympics and Paralympics will be the pinnacle in many athletes' careers and I'm determined to make it a year to remember.

"The BT Paralympic World Cup is always an essential step in my competition calendar and this year it will be more important than ever.

"I always love competing at the event as it kick-starts my summer season and provides me with immaculate foundations to progress through the summer with."
